Registration

MSM accepts new students all year round!  For information about dates of instruction, holidays, or recitals, please refer to the Academic Calendar.

Adult students are also accepted.

How to Register

All incoming students should schedule a trial lesson with Melissa Malouf. Do so by emailing maloufpiano@gmail.com.

Before attending the audition, please familiarize yourself with all MSM policies regarding attendance, make-up lessons, late fees and tuition.

What to Expect at Your Audition

At the trial lesson, Melissa will assess your level in order to determine whether the studio is appropriate for you, and provide you with references to method/repertoire books to purchase. She will ask you to promptly purchase these items and may give you an assignment.

Beginning/new students will be taught an introduction to the piano and playing.  For students who have had prior piano lessons, please come prepared to play a piece of music.

Melissa and the student will select possible lesson times depending on your respective schedules. With a full schedule of students, she will do her best to accommodate your needs without compromising her own.

Finally, you will be asked to sign paperwork agreeing to follow the studio policies. Please view the make-up and rescheduling policies before scheduling a time with Melissa.

Required Materials & Piano

Piano: Students are expected to have a well-tuned piano with 88 weighted keys. If practice is executed correctly by using weighted keys, students will succeed at learning the piano and develop the necessary strength to play advanced literature. Students who lack a piano with weighted keys are robbed of the opportunity to develop finger strength necessary for correct technique. In addition, it has been my experience that those students without an acoustic piano quickly lose interest in learning the piano. Electronic keyboards and organs are not sufficient.

Books: Students should purchase any repertoire/method books that Melissa assigns, including the requested editors and editions. This may also include note reading apps and or flash cards.

Metronome: Students should have either a physical metronome or metronome App on a smart-phone. This will be used to learn rhythm and will be necessary in collaboration rehearsals.

Terminating Lessons

Student Initiated Termination: Please provide Melissa with at least one month’s notice before terminating lessons. Times for the termination of lessons during the academic year (September-June) must be mutually agreed upon between the student/parent and Melissa.

Teacher Initiated Termination: Fall lessons may be terminated due to a lack of attendance during the summer (see summer attendance policy above for details). Lessons may also be terminated at any time for failure to comply with studio policies and commitments (for example, this includes practice, attendance and on-time payments). Melissa will reevaluate students at the end of each school year for compliance.
